Remember the day that your parents let you ride your bike around the block for the first time alone? For many people, the memory of that first taste of freedom is unforgettable. Regretfully, there are physically handicapped children in every town across our nation who are unable to experience the joy of riding a bicycle. Their physical limitations prevent them from participating in this simple childhood pleasure.
The financial burden for families that have a special needs child can be devastating. The expenses of daily life can far exceed the costs normally associated with raising a non-handicapped child. There are some wonderful families in this world who struggle daily with providing just the basic necessities. They cannot imagine being able to afford a special bicycle for their child to ride. It is a heart breaking experience for parents to see their children sit on the sideline, as they watch other kids joyfully ride their bikes.
In 2011, the founders of Special Bikes 4 Special Kids (SB4SK) dedicated the organization’s mission to giving childhood back to these special young people. We believe that all children, regardless of their background or physical limitations, should be given the chance to experience the joy, freedom and sense of accomplishment that comes with riding a bicycle on their own.
SB4SK is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that raises money to pay for the building of custom-made, specially equipped bicycles for children with physical challenges. We hold several fund raisers throughout the year, our main one being the “Let The Good Times Roll”-a Fat Tuesday dinner & party, which is held to coincide with Mardi Gras.
Through the kindness and generous donations from our supporters, SB4SK has provided over 50 custom made bicycles to children with special needs, at absolutely no cost to the family.
Please help us change children’s lives, one bike at a time. Together, we can inspire many more kids to exclaim “I Can!”.
